Every year during March the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network(CoCoRaHS) conducts “March Madness”, a campaign to see how many new observers each state can recruit. Do you have an interest in measuring rain, hail, and snow from your own backyard? Why not become a member of the ever growing community of CoCoRaHS observers? My site is IL-GY-1, the first to sign up in Grundy county. We currently only have 2 other observers in the county and could use many more. To learn more about the program visit the CoCoRaHS web page. You will need to purchase an official CoCoRaHS rain gauge for accuracy and consistency, the cost is about $25.00.

This is severe weather preparedness week. Would you and your family know what to do if severe weather threatened? Here are some steps you can take to prepare for severe weather:

Buy a NOAA Weather Radio -This is the most direct way to get severe weather watches, warnings and advisories from the National Weather Service. Make sure you purchase one with Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) capability that allows you to program your county. A weather radio can be placed in a standby mode and will sound an alarm if a warning has been issued for your county. More info on weather radios can be found here.

Have a safety plan in place at your home or business. Learn more here.

Additional information on severe weather preparedness week is available from the the NWS Chicago office.
