Goose Lake Weather Blog

Severe thunderstorms produced penny to ping pong ball sized hail, heavy rainfall, and high winds from around Mazon to Diamond and on east into Will and Kankakee counties yesterday evening. The storms passed about 4 miles south of the Goose Lake Weather station and produced only brief moderate rain here although vivid lightning could be seen from those storms.  The image shows the storm total precipitation from that narrow band of storms in central Grundy county. Much heavier rains and flooding occurred further south. Some damage reports from Grundy county are included below…the majority supplied by the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency and Grundy County SkyWarn spotters.

A strong cold front moved through just before 1AM this morning. Temperatures dropped from near 70° to the mid 40′s by daybreak. Winds shifted to the north as well. The image below shows when the cold front moved through as seen by the increase in wind speed, change in wind direction, and drop in temperature.

Humidity has increased over the last 48 hrs. Showers and storms just grazed the area overnight with areas along and north of I-88 receiving between 1 and 2 inches of rain. A cold front will be moving through tonight providing a brief cool down Tuesday and Wednesday but temperatures should be back in the 70′s by Thursday. There is also a chance of severe storms late today and tonight as the cold front pushes through the area.

A deep low pressure system over Illinois is resulting in a very wet and windy Mother’s Day today. Some low lying flooding has already begun as rainfall amounts so far this morning are approaching 1.5 inches.  Radar continues to show more rain…heavy at times….headed this way.

A cold front resulted in some isolated storms late yesterday evening but the most significant change was the obvious drop in temperatures. Yesterday’s high in the low 70s seems tropical compared to today’s high of only around 50 along with very wind and damp conditions.
