Heavy Rainfall April 27, 2009

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Storm total rainfall ending April 28, 2009.
Yesterday evening, a band of heavy rain moved across portions of northeast Grundy county. The Goose Lake Weather station experienced at least 4 hours of continuous moderate to heavy rainfall as individual showers “trained” over the same area. It was interesting as no lightning/thunder was experienced, just periods of heavy rain and calm to light wind conditions. Our 24 hour rainfall total this morning read from the manual rain gauge was 3.26 inches! Most of that fell in that 4 hour time span. It has been an extremely wet April and spring. Our monthly total now stands at 7.75 inches.

Their is much standing water around the area and streams are once again on the rise. I’m sure the local farmers are getting anxious to get out in the fields. I’d be curious to know what a “normal” average planting date is for around here and how this year compares.

April Snow

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Yesterday was interesting with thunderstorms, moderate rain, strong winds,  and eventually heavy wet snow. We ended up with 2.1 inches of snow, one of the most significant late snows in quite some time. Fortunately the April sun can quickly melt a late season snow. Our moisture from recent rains and melted snow continue to keep soil moisture well above normal.
